Luke's Story

By Kathy H

Luke and I began our journey together long before we met. Linked together through a series of phone calls, emails and a referral that came from outside Wide Horizons, though finalized by them, he captured my heart the instant I saw the first pictures of him. Caught in the midst of the Hague conundrum and various other political and legal quagmires, it took 13 long months to get Luke home from Guatemala. I became a weekly visitor to the Guatemalan Embassy in New York City! Fortunately, he was placed in a private foster home, and his care was excellent. Mountains of paperwork, months of waiting and anguish faded the minute I first held him in my arms. Though it may sound trite, I knew from the moment I saw his picture that we were meant to be together. Later that first day, when he nuzzled into my neck for the first time, it felt like he was finally home.

Life with Luke has been an adventure. He is a bright and inquisitive child, who likes nothing better than to be running and playing ball in the midst of a gang of kids. He has a wonderful sense of self, and thankfully, a great sense of humor. He is a child who "lights up the room" with an infectious grin and happy demeanor. He loves nothing better than a party.

Adopting a child as a single mom has been an amazing experience. Luke has brought a joy to my life that I have never known before. I can truly say that he is the best thing to ever have come into my life. His insights and questions encourage me to think about things in a way I never would have before. There is nothing like a child's perspective to stop you in your tracks and say, "Hey... I never thought of it like that before!" A popular statement by people who learn of his adoption is, "Isn't he a lucky little boy!" I would submit to you that I am the lucky one!
