Annual Appeal 2011

MariaThe barrio in Guatemala City is filled with makeshift homes, dozens upon dozens, constructed of odds and ends - metal, timber, plastic. Wherever you look, you see the big, brown eyes of children, hovering in doorways.

Eight-year-old Maria lives in one of these shacks with her parents and five siblings. Life is hard for them. Guatemala is an extremely poor country, with little work, widespread illiteracy and a high crime rate.

These challenges put tremendous strain on Maria's parents. If her family buckles under the weight of this destitution, Maria's chance of a successful, productive life, or even survival, is slim.

Maria's family came to the attention of the sponsorship staff who works in her neighborhood. Through the WHFC Child Sponsorship Program, Maria is able to remain in her home, receive an education and nutritious meals. With help from her WHFC sponsor, Maria's parents even bought a sewing machine: they're now making blankets and baby hats and selling them in the local market.

The support Wide Horizons For Children gives to families like Maria's means the difference between hope and despair. As a committed WHFC supporter, I know you understand the importance of this work - and in keeping families together and communities strong.

For more than 35 years, you have partnered with us on projects like the Child Sponsorship Program, helping provide the safety, security, and sustenance every child needs. With gifts from friends like you, WHFC transforms the lives of vulnerable children worldwide - in Africa, latin America, Asia and Eastern Europe.

Can you make a gift to continue this life-changing work? We know, like us, you believe every child deserves a home and a better chance. Your support now will find homes for orphaned and abandoned children, and prevent children living at the edges of society, like Maria, from being abandoned.

Gratefully,

Janice Hoffman
