Humanitarian Aid in Colombia - Chiquitines Education Project

Centro de Adopcion Chiquitines was founded in March 1978 by a groupt of Colombian citizens who wanted to make a difference in the lives of abandoned children. As a licensed non-profit agency, Chiquitines operates as a private adoption house, providing housing, legal assistance, education, psychological care, health care, speech therapy, and recreation to children in its care.

Prior to 2004, Chiquitines children ages 2-10 years received their education in public schools. This proved unsuccessful as the orphaned children, who had greater emotional and cognitive needs than their peers who lived with their families, did not receive the proper help they required. In 2004, as a solution to these educational concerns, Chiquitines opened two classrooms for preschool and elementary education using the "Waldorf Education Method," which promotes a child's emotional and spiritual well-being. The children are taught math, Spanish, social and natural sciences, foreign language, physical education, art, and music.

The school has been an immediate success and continues to expand. The total cost of the program is US$75,130. Each year, WHFC gives Chiquitines a donation to support the school. With your help, more children will be able to attend this school for at-risk children.

While the needs of children in Colombia seem endless, with your help we can continue to make a world of difference. Please join us today by visiting our online donation page or contacting Ali Crandall, Humanitarian Aid Manager, at 781.419.0340 or acrandall@whfc.org.
