Humanitarian Aid in Ethiopia - Food Shortage Crisis
A yearlong drought throughout Ethiopia combined with soaring global food prices has resulted in wide-spread hunger and malnutrition. Upcoming harvests are likely to fail due to the absence of the small rains that allow a second round of crops to be planted each year. Both the Sidama Zone and Tigray Region are "hot spots" for food shortages. Some experts project that this crisis will be worse than the 2003 food shortage.
WHFC is in close communication with Dr. Tsegaye on the best way to help alleviate the problems related to famine. Individuals and families wishing to make a donation to combat the food shortage are urged to make a contribution to the child sponsorship program. This program allows us an established venue to get food and other basic resources to those most in need. Children enrolled in the program are from the most destitute and impoverished families in their communities. Sponsorship funds go toward food, medical care, and other basic needs. Proper nutrition and medical care are especially crucial during a time of famine to prevent and treat malnutrition among children.
Those who would like to make a one-time donation of any amount for the relief of children affected by the food shortage can make a "general donation" to the Ethiopia Child Sponsorship Program. These funds will be used to help the children in the most destitute conditions. Individuals interested in an ongoing sponsorship commitment can be matched with a child and will receive annual updates and communication on the child. The annual cost for sponsoring a child is $420.
