Humanitarian Aid in the Philippines - WHFC Philippines Medical Fund

The WHFC Philippines Medical Fund began in the 1980's. Each time Wide Horizons' Philippine Adoption Program Coordinator, Mary Lou Eshelman, traveled to the Philippines, she visited 20-25 orphanages. At each orphanage, she found that they generally had enough money for food for the children and to pay caregiver salaries. However, many orphanages had little extra money for medical care expenses. She learned that children were kept in hospitals until an orphanage found enough money to pay the hospital bills. In addition, some of the fchildren needed surgeries to correct cleft lips or improve their vision, and others needed treatment for various growth delays or illnesses. Relatively little money was needed to make a big difference in a child's life. Out of this need, the idea for the WHFC Philippines Medical Fund was born.

Over the past 20 years, Wide Horizons has been contributing money to more than 40 orphanages for medical care. The money has been used to provide needed vitamins, growth hormone injections, hospitalizations for sepsis and dengue fever, surgeries for a variety of problems, and much more. In 2008, Wide Horizons plans to donate $50,000 to orphanages in the Philippines to cover the costs of medical care.

Your donation was timely and very much appreciated. We had two children hospitalized for pneumonia.
