Humanitarian Aid in Moldova - Support for Orphanages

The Republic of Moldova, which sits between Romania and Ukraine, is the poorest country in Europe. Most families are impoverished, with day-to-day life a desperate struggle. Thousands of parents who cannot provide for their children are forced to leave them in under-resourced, state-run institutions while they search for work abroad; for other children, one or both parents have died. When Moldova was open to international adoption, orphanages benefited from the donations of adoptive parents and their agencies. This is no longer the case, as child welfare officials currently allow very few adoptions abroad each year.

Since 2003, A Better Life / Moldova (ABL), a small group of WHFC adoptive parents concerned about the fate of orphaned and impoverished children in Moldova, has raised money to improve living conditions in state-run institutions. Infrastructure and capital projects are done in partnership with Moldova World Chldren's Fund (MWCF).

Current Efforts

In 2010, donations funded new windows, doors, pipes and radiators at Cazanesti, a boarding school housing more than 100 children in central Moldova. In 2011, we expect to replace the furnace to improve the heating system. With continued support, we can complete additional, much-needed infrastructure improvements there.

Since 2008, in partnership with Insula Sperantelor ("Island of Hope"), donations have also helped fund vocational training for young adults who have "aged out" of state-run institutions. These teens would otherwise face life on the streets - falling victim to child trafficking or turning to crime, drugs or prostitution for survival. What Your Support has Meant

Your generosity has helped us make a tremendous difference in the lives of Moldova's most vulnerable children, making possible much-needed capital improvements to decrepit facilities. In other cases, donations have provided food, medicine, heat, hot water and new beds - simple comforts many of us take for granted. Here is a listing of some of what we have been able to accomplish with your support:

  • Balti Boarding School, Balti Raion County - 40 new beds, laundry room repair and installation of an industrial-size washer and dryer
  • Botanica Baby Home, Chisinau - Food, medicine, diapers, clothing, soap and much-needed tables, chairs and kitchen repairs
