Humanitarian Aid in China - Special Needs

Many of China's institutions are under-resourced and lack updated facilities to care for orphans with special needs. Mobility limitations and insufficient medical care access are just a couple of the many obstacles that orphans with special needs face. Wide Horizons, in partnership with the China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA), is working to provide these children with aid to expand their horizons and improve the quality of their lives.

Elevators for Fuling Orphanage, Chongqing, China

Fuling Social Welfare Institute has recently constructed a new facility for its children on the outskirts of the city. Through the generous support of our donors, WIde Horizons is proud to have provided funding for two elevators in this new building.

Approximately 500 healthy and special needs children currently reside in Fuling. The new facility is intended to house up to 800 children, the majority of them with disabilities. Because of the profile of its residents, the building will be specially equipped and furnished to meet the needs of children with developmental and physical needs. Elevators are a vital aspect of the building's infrastructure as they will allow caretakers to easily transport immobile children between floors to receive the treatments they need. The elevators will also allow for some of these children, typically restricted by their immobility, to have access to the outdoors and to improve the quality of life.

CCAA's child raising department will oversee this project and provide us with regular updates. They are also working to identify additional projects for funding that will benefit children with special needs in China.

Past Projects to Aid Children with Special Needs

In the past, Wide Horizons has contributed washers and dryers, refrigerators, water heaters, and disinfectant equipment to rural orphanages that house children with special needs.
