Humanitarian Aid in Colombia
More than four decades of armed conflict have resulted in a troubling humanitarian aid crisis among Colombia's women and children. In the last 15 years alone, 3 million people (75% of whom were women and children) were internally displaced because of conflict. A large portion of Colombians find themselves politically powerless, poorly educated, and without adequate housing, healthcare, or sanitation. To provide for their families, parents are forced to work long hours, leaving older children to care for their younger siblings. Roaming the streets, many children have become victims of the violence, including 7,000 children who are currently enslaved as child soldiers. Thousands of other children have become orphaned or abandoned due to the conflict and reside in Colombia's orphanages.
