Humanitarian Aid in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
A Nation in Desperate Need
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), formerly known as Belgian Congo and Zaire, is the third largest country in Africa. Ravaged by disease and war, DRC is home to 30 percent of all orphans in Central and West Africa. As the country struggles to move past its turbulent history, the Congolese are plagued by extreme poverty and lack of infrastructure - realities that worsen its child welfare crisis.
Wide Horizons For Children (WHFC) introduced a pilot adoption program in DRC in September 2010. However, we expect that only a fraction of the estimated 3 million orphaned children will be eligible for international adoption. For this reason, we have launched a humanitarian aid program there, raising money to meet urgent needs such as food for orphans at risk for starvation. Caretakers had been forced to beg for food to keep the children alive. We need your support to continue this life-saving program.
Below are just a few examples of how your donation can help:
- $30 feeds an infant for 2 weeks
- $50 feeds 5 infants (0-5 months of age) for a week
- $475 feeds 1 child (age 1-2 years) for an entire month
- $100 feeds 5 children (age 1-2 years) for a week
