Tatiana is studying to become a hair stylist. Our sponsors fund vocational training for teens like Tatiana who are impoverished or have "aged out" of state-run institutions in Moldova, the poorest country in Europe. Without meaningful job skills, older orphans often face a grim spectrum of possibilities — drug abuse, crime, prostitution, and child trafficking.

Since 2008, in partnership with A Better Life / Moldova (ABL, a group of WHFC adoptive parents, we have funded vocational training for young adult orphans and other teens who are impoverished. Some have already been victims of child trafficking. The program is administered by Insula Sperantelor ("Island of Hope"), an NGO located in the capital city of Chisinau. Experienced instructors train students to become hairdressers, manicurists/pedicurists, pastry chefs and cooks, vocations currently in demand. In addition, psychologists and social workers help these young adults develop the practical skills they need to live independently. Upon graduation from the 8-month program, students are given jobs and followed for several years to ensure their continued success. Sponsors and students who write to each other also have the unique opportunity to share a meaningful connection.
How Sponsorship Works
Sponsoring a student costs $1,400 per year, which covers training, job placement and the long-term supervision so critical to their future. To help manage the cost of sponsorship, you can choose to donate in quarterly or semi-annual installments.
In place of a full sponsorship, you can provide a $500 scholarship to help cover the cost of the program for one student! Donors who choose this option will receive an update after the student completes the program.
