China Adoption Program: Travel

Travel occurs 2-3 months after referral. Although both spouses are encouraged to travel, only one spouse needs to make the trip to China. The entire trip takes approximately two weeks. For families adopting from the Guangdong province, the trip lasts three weeks.

As of October 2007, 139 groups of Wide Horizons' families have traveled to China and brought home over 1,500 children. The groups vary in size, but typically include 8-20 families. Prior to travel, families attend a comprehensive travel orientation meeting. Travel arrangements, including accommodations, are made through the agency and families are provided with a guide and translator in China.

Each group is accompanied by a medical professional or a staff member. Group travel provides a very positive experience for families, offering support and friendship during this intensely exciting time. Most families stay in touch with each other after returning with their children and regular reunions of group members are typical.
