Colombia Adoption Program: Travel

Within weeks of accepting a referral, adoptive parents should be prepared to travel to Colombia to complete the adoption process. Both parents must travel to Colombia to meet their child and initiate the legal proceedings. Depending on the courts, travel and stay in Colombia will be 4-6 weeks.

After one week in country, one parent may return home, while the other stays for the remainder of the legal process. During that time, the parent is interviewed by the Colombia Institute for Family Welfare (ICBF). The interview generally focuses on client's commitment to the particular child and the ability to take care of the child throughout their stay.
