It has 22 States and 9 union territories. Having been governed by the British for over a hundred years, English is the main language spoken in all parts of India. India is a densely populated country, especially in the four largest cities of Mumbai (Bombay), New Delhi (Capital of India), Chennai (Madras) and Calcutta. The majority of people are Hindus and the next largest group is Muslims.
