Humanitarian Aid Projects: Colombia

Dramatic class stratification characterizes the main issue that many Colombians face. A large portion of Colombians find themselves politically powerless, poorly educated and without adequate housing, healthcare, or sanitation. As a result many children suffer, even those with families. All the more defenseless against the realities of poverty are those with out families.

Children at Casita De Nicolas

ICBF (Colombian Institute for Family Welfare), in Bogota

The ICBF is seeking a donation of $5,000 to help with the expansion of "Procrear Maņana", a private, social, non-governmental organization with a mission to offer protection, guidance and support to pregnant teenagers.

General Humanitarian Aid Support

For over 30 years, Wide Horizons For Children has been working with private orphanages such as Chiquitines under the direction of the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare (ICBF). While we continue to generously support Chiquitines with larger projects, we are now building ties with other orphanages and child welfare centers in urgent need of assistance. We will continue to send agency representatives to Colombia in order to identify new projects in desperate need of our funding. With your help, Wide Horizons can continue to respond to the urgent needs of children in Colombia.

Projects underway or completed with your help:

  • An adoption booklet for children ages 4 to 6 at Casita de Nicolas was created. This interactive book helps the children express their emotions, feelings and fears, and helps them to better understand what is happening in the adoption process.
  • Industrial washing machine purchased for "More Than Survivors," an institution cares for about 30 at-risk children, mostly orphans, between the ages of 6 and 18
  • Industrial food processor for "Hogar de Infantiles San Jose," an orphanage of about 365 children
  • Grant provided to Hospital Universitario San Vincente de Paul in Medellin for medical equipment for their pediatric department

Amparo: A parent-led initiative

Adoptive parents have formed a committee to raise money for at-risk children in Colombia, which they have named Amparo (refuge). They have already raised significant funds and welcome your involvement. For more information about this committee, contact Lindsay Carver at lcarver@whfc.org.

While the needs of children in Colombia seem endless, with your help we can continue to make a world of difference. Please join us today by visiting our online donation page or contacting Lindsay Carver, Development Coordinator, at 781.419.0327 or lcarver@whfc.org.
