Humanitarian Aid Projects: Moldova

Moldova is a small country near Romania and the poorest in all of Europe. With the suspension in international adoptions from Moldova, Wide Horizons For Children has redoubled its efforts to bring much-needed aid and hope to the thousands of children living in Moldova's child institutions, where conditions are often poor and resources scarce. In addition to frequent staff travel, we have established a reliable in-country network to ensure donors that their generosity will be used most effectively for these children. Your support is needed for us to continue this important work.

Support Humanitarian Aid Projects

Botanika Children's Home

At Botanika, the children frequently go hungry. WHFC has supplied several months' worth of provisions to this orphanage including food, medicines, diapers, clothing and soap. In addition, we recently donated 60 chairs and some tables for the children. Botanika is home to about 100 children.

ORHEI Orphanage for Boys with Special Needs

ORHEI is home to 300+ boys, with most being physically disabled or mentally retarded. We recently repaired three of the dilapidated roofs at ORHEI in a successful joint venture with KANUGA Conferences. Additionally, the orphanage director has asked for 60 wheelchairs since many of the children cannot sit up without support and are currently bedridden. They also need feeding tubes, disposable diapers, and help with capital building improvements.

Hincesti Institution for Girls with Special Needs

Nearly half of the children residing at this facility have special needs resulting from cerebral palsy, retardation and immobility. We recently helped them purchase 150 pairs of good quality orthopedic shoes. They also need help with capital improvements to their heating system and for the purchase of a commercial washing machine and dryer.

General Humanitarian Aid Support

Our experience has shown that the needs of larger facilities, which house older and special needs children, are even more severe. These institutions, and those in rural areas, are often ignored and receive little funding. Wide Horizons continues to work with existing partners, in addition to sending agency representatives to Moldova in order to identify new projects in desperate need of our funding. With your help, Wide Horizons can continue to respond to the urgent needs of children in Moldova.

A Better Life: A parent-led initiative

Wide Horizons For Children also works with a A Better Life, a committee of concerned parents and friends, to raise and allocate critical humanitarian aid funding in Moldova. ABL was founded by Gus Demeo, an adoptive parent who has personally raised nearly $100,000 for children in Moldova through his Jack's Team fundraisers. Jeff Gerson is another ABL member who has raised significant funds for Moldova. For more information about the amazing work of ABL, Gus can be reached at gus.demeo@tcw.com.

While the needs of children in Moldova seem endless, with your help we can continue to make a world of difference. Please join us today by visiting our online donation page or contacting Lindsay Carver, Development Coordinator, at 781.419.0327 or lcarver@whfc.org.
