THE NEED

Despite India’s growing middle class and other economic advances, poverty there is still rampant. Perhaps the hardest hit population is the country’s children. Due to strict adoption guidelines in the country, many orphaned children are left behind in institutions where they will likely spend their entire lives. Children with special needs may languish in inadequate facilities, depending on the constant care of overworked staff for their survival. In slum communities, children live with large families in one-room, makeshift homes without electricity and running water, often having to work from a young age to supplement their family’s income.

OUR WORK

WHFC has worked in India for over 30 years. In addition to placing more than 240 children in loving homes, we have contributed to a number of humanitarian aid projects for the children who are left behind and facing a life of grinding poverty. We are proud to be working with dedicated organizations and individuals in India who share our passion to make a lasting difference for children.

SOFOSH has realized its long-time dream of constructing a permanent home the population of special needs children living there. These children are considered unadoptable and rely on caretakers for their basic survival.

Bal Anand is planning a permanent residential facility for special needs children and young adults who will spend their lives depending on caretakers.

Women in the destitute Colaba Market Slum Community are benefitting from educational programs and a community center from which to run these programs.
