Humanitarian Aid in Ethiopia - Tigray Region

In a country characterized by severe deprivation and poverty, Tigray stands out as the country’s most desperate area. Adwa is a city in the northern part of Ethiopia with a population of 700,000 people who rely on subsistence farming for survival, and have little or no acess to health care or education. About 38,000 of these are orphans.

Tsion Elementary School, Adwa

WHFC funded two phases of expansion for the elementary school, paying for both the construction of additional classrooms and the basic outfitting. The expansion of this school will support 400 additional children who can attend and free up resources in the community that are currently used to support these children.

These classrooms were visited by a staff member on a recent trip, and we are encouraged that enrollment will increase with the addition of the extra classroom space. Having been reassured about the project’s success, we are now investigating opportunities to further expand, furnish and/or equip the school.

Future Project: Adwa Comprehensive Medical Clinic

In discussion with our colleague Dr. Tsegaye, we have identified a significant medical project in the town of Adwa. The population of approximately half a million people is essentially without medical services of any kind. A singular hospital, designed and outfitted to serve a population of 25,000 is too far out of the way and too overcrowded to be considered an option for help.

Following on-site visits by our program staff, we began the process of scoping out a medical project. The proposed facility will include examination rooms, an operating room, delivery rooms and facilities for other medical services. Importantly, the facility will enable both the delivery of treatment and the basis for preventative community-based initiatives. The project will be done in two phases, the first phase consisting of construction of the main building. This is the largest project ever undertaken by WHFC and we will be actively searching for leading donors for this project.
