Home Study & CIS Updates
Important Information Regarding Your Home Study and U.S. CIS Update
Please review carefully before proceeding to other pages on this website
You have been directed to this webpage because, from the information that we have on file, it appears that you need to update your approval with U.S. CIS (Citizenship & Immigration Service). It is essential that you keep your CIS approval up to date throughout your adoption process. Failure to do so can result in significant delays in bringing your child home.
This webpage has been designed to guide you through requirements related to both the Home Study update process, as well as CIS extension requests.
The following applies to all I-600A and I-800A extension requests:
- You must have an updated Home Study report in order to file an extension request. To update your Home Study, state and federally required documents must be completed. Please be sure to select the state in which you currently reside from the navigation bar on the left, and pay close attention to country specific requirements included.
- As part of this update process, a Social Worker must make a visit to your home if a home visit has not occurred within the past year. It may take several weeks, or even months, to complete the paperwork required for a Home Study update. It is imperative to begin this process immediately. An expired home study can result in significant delays in your adoption process, including prohibiting you from extending your approval with CIS.
- Although we are diligent in our efforts to keep this site up to date, state agencies and U.S. CIS often change their requirements without notice. In these instances, we may need to request additional documentation from you.
- There is a fee for Home Study updates - you will be receiving an invoice from our Finance Department. CIS fees may also apply. Each I600A or I800A approval includes one free extension and refingerprinting as long as the extension request is filed before the expiration date. Late or subsequent requests require a fee.
Please contact us should you have any questions about updating your Home Study or CIS approval. We understand that this may feel overwhelming at times, and we are here to guide and support you through this critical step in your adoption process.
