Domestic Adoption

Families Needed For African-American Children

Wide Horizons For Children has placed almost 900 children with loving families through the Domestic Adoption Program. With three different placement options available, many applicants are successful in becoming adoptive parents often in much less time than it takes to adopt internationally.

You can adopt a newborn through this program and have the opportunity for an open relationship with your child's biological family. Children of all races and ethnicities are available and eligibility criteria are flexible. Families are especially needed for African-American children. You must have an approved home study from Wide Horizons For Children to be eligible for this program. Subsidies may be available for eligible children.

"Wide Horizons For Children coached and supported us through the domestic adoption process, and, as they promised, we were graced with the exact right match to grow our family. Wide Horizons staff asked tough questions and helped us explore ourselves throughout the process. They normalized our feelings and the questions we were asking, and ensured that the needs and humanity of the birth family were front and center. In the end, we know we were matched with the right family, and are forever grateful for the skill with which Wide Horizons led us all through the process."

Eligibility criteria are flexible. Since expectant parents choose adoptive parents, there are no set criteria with respect to age, race, marital status, sexual orientation or family composition.

Married or unmarried heterosexual or same-sex couples, single women and men are welcome to apply. African-American birth parents often express a preference for African-American adoptive families. If you share this heritage with the birth family, you may have a shorter wait to become a parent.

The Wide Horizons Domestic Adoption Program is open to families living in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and certain counties in New York. Call us to see if we serve your area!

Children Who Need Families

Children relinquished into private domestic adoption by their biological parents are typically newborns who join their adoptive family after discharge from the hospital or shortly thereafter. It is rare for children over age 1 to be available for placement. Infants placed for adoption are from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds.

We offer three "pathways to placement" for adoptive families:

  • With direct-service adoptions, we provide counseling services for expectant parents considering an adoption plan who select the family with whom they wish to place their child based on adoptive parent profiles
  • With agency-assisted adoptions, adoption professionals from across the country contact us seeking adoptive parent profiles to present to expectant parents for whom they do not have an appropriate family
  • With parent-initiated adoptions, adoptive parents use WHFC for home study and post-placement services only and work with a placing resource of their choice

Information You Can Expect to Receive

Wide Horizons For Children shares all information we obtain on the biological parents. We request current medical records from service providers, and obtain self-reports from the biological parents on their medical and social background.

Estimated Wait Times for a Referral

Expectant parents review adoptive family profiles and choose the family with whom they wish to place their child. This usually occurs before the baby is born, but does happen after the birth of a child on occasion. Although wait times have ranged from as short as 1 day to as long as 36 months, the current wait times are averaging 1-12 months from the time your home study is completed through the arrival of your child. Factors that affect waiting time include how flexible you are with respect to the child’s race, ethnicity and medical condition, whether you will accept a history of high-risk behavior, substance abuse, medical and/or mental health issues on the part of the biological parents, and/or your willingness to have an open relationship with the biological family.

Travel Requirements

You will be required to travel to your child’s place of birth when the child is born, and may need to remain in-state for 2-3 weeks until permission to return home is granted by state authorities.
