Granny Program

A child in Moldova needs love and attention.
A Granny is there, providing that care.

Moldova is the poorest country in Europe. So it's no surprise that many children end up in orphanage care, without enough caretakers to give them the love and attention they need. Fortunately, for some of Moldova's youngest children, that picture is changing, with the help of Wide Horizons For Children (WHFC) and donors like you.

The Granny Program was started in 2005 to bring a ray of hope to children deprived of the loving bond between mother and child...a bond essential to their lifelong ability to learn and trust. "Grannies" — local women who spend time each weekday with young children living in orphanages  — are transforming lives, one day at a time.

What is the Granny Program?

WHFC brings together 30 "Grannies" with 120 children—from babies to age 7, many with special needs, at two different orphanages in the capital city of Chisinau. Through the Granny Program, the children benefit greatly from individual attention, which improves bonding, attachment and development.

What kind of care do the children receive?

Grannies help children build their confidence, improve fine and gross motor abilities, and learn better behavior and language skills. They take the kids on field trips, play games with them, and do arts and crafts. Sometimes they even celebrate holidays together! By spending quality time with the children, Grannies are able to support the kids where they are. In other words, it's not just about building skills... it's about love.

How can you help?

If you have a child you’ve adopted from Moldova, and want to reconnect with the country of their birth...

If you want to help kids who are growing up without a family of their own...

Or if you want to help improve the care these neediest of children receive...

...Your support is urgently needed. Your gift could make a big difference in the life of a vulnerable child. You’ll not only help them learn to hope and trust, you’ll also help them learn how to love, and be loved.

Want to learn more?

Call us at Wide Horizons For Children today. You'll learn first-hand the kind of impact the Grannies are having on the lives of these abandoned children. And you'll see why, when they have to wait an entire weekend before their next visit, the grannies say they really miss the children!
