Counseling, Consultation and Coaching
"As a parent, you want more than anything to see your child happy and thriving. Nothing is more painful than seeing them struggle. We will empower you to help your child."
Sophia placed in your arms as a newborn, is an absolute delight. She is bright, curious and happy, full of zest for life. Sophia just turned four and suddenly she has started crying when you drop her off at day care.
"IS THIS ABOUT ADOPTION?"
Seven-year-old Julia has been home from China for three years. She is a beautiful girl but her behavior at home is very difficult for you to manage. Julia constantly wants to be in control of everything, sometimes screaming, thrashing or biting when she is upset.
"WILL THIS EVER GET BETTER?"
Mark knows he was born in Russia. A photo from the day you met him is in his room, but he has never shown much curiosity. Lately, he has been acting out and you are feeling like maybe you need to open up the discussion again but you don't know what to say.
"HOW DO I TALK ABOUT ADOPTION?"
One day your teenage son, Tyler, leaves his tablet open in the living room and you see a chat between him and his adult brother in Colombia. You had no idea they were in contact and the chat seems to go back for several months. Feeling guilty, you stop reading but you see that Tyler is talking about going to visit.
"DO I NEED TO HELP MY CHILD CONNECT WITH HIS BIRTH FAMILY?"
If you are seeking help, we are here for you. Every parent needs advocates in their parenting journey and adoptive parents need someone with a deep understanding of adoption.
While adoption has an undeniable impact in the life of a child, we also know that not every developmental crisis stems from adoption.
Your post adoption social worker will:
- Listen to your questions and concerns
- Consider the unique needs and situation of your child
- Provide developmental information and parenting strategies
- Educate you about adoption-related challenges children face
- Create with you a path for moving foward
It is not uncommon for brief counseling to address your parenting concerns and give you the tools and insight you need to help your child. If there is a need for ongoing comprehensive or targeted services, we will help you connect to appropriate resources and professionals in your community and provide consultation as your child begins to progress.
We look forward to being your adoption resource in this important time in your family's life.
